Extremely High CPU on Mac Mini
#1
Hi All,

I have been playing around with XBMC for a few weeks now, and have a copy running on my Macbook and my Mac Mini.

They have exactly the same hardware, 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 1 GB Ram, 64Mb Shared Video Memory.

The performance however is completely different. My Laptop idles when XBMC at around 25-30% CPU, where as my Mac Mini idles at around 90%.

When browsing movies in Aeon and Alaska skins my Macbook jumps up to around 50% and I get 20-25 fps. On my Mac Mini it jumps to 100%+ and I get 4 or 5 fps.

Any ideas on what could be causing this, the only difference between the two is My Laptop is running Tiger and Mac Mini Snow Leopard.

Thanks

Alex

No xbmc.log, I guess you except one to guess how you have setup the MacMini ? I have no clue unless you post xbmc.log to a pastebin site and post the URL here. My crystal ball says you have both rendering set to auto, set it to ARB on the MacMini and report back.

Could be Snow Leopard, since you are not running the default skins, give a try with pm3.hd and viewing the in the same place of xbmc (main window).

Just tried and CPU usage is still about twice as much on the Mac Mini (35%) compared to Macbook (16%). Logs below.

Probably frequency scaling giving you the allusion that it's using more CPU, now.

Sounds about right for idling in the main screen. 10.6 seems have some sort of regression about display updating and CPU usage. The apple forums and others are filled with this issue.

Remember that even though you might think xbmc is idling, it's still rendering the GUI at 60 frames per second.
