Hi folks,

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a fresh installation of XBMC - and then have a Ubuntu Desktop on top of that?

So that you would be able to switch between the XBMC media-player mode, and a real Desktop Environment?

Yes, it works just fine. Install the desktop version of Ubuntu 9.10, then follow this guide in the wiki.

Or you can add the desktop on top of live or minimal.
(if you want to keep the live autostart do not install gdm)
