I have the idea that since many moveis has black borders. Why not make use of them for subtitle space. So if the movie is not 16:9 and thus not fill the whole screen you could slide the move up a little to make more room for a subtitle.

I don't know if you'd want this feature. It may look really wierd since i have not tested this in any way. But I think it could be a neat idea.

we already put subtitles on top of the letterboxing (unless it's bitmap based subs, then we don't have much choice - they usually do as well though). having the window non-centered on the screen would be horrible imo.
