Possible inclusion of these strings
#1
Blittan,

would you want to add any of theses strings to xbmc's strings.xml.

i just included all the special ones needed for weather plugin. i know some are more skin specific. bold/italic are probably too skin specific to include? though the skin could use [UPPER], then maybe the all caps ones could be included?

I don't want to be like to get involved but I want say it again Smile Like as I said before, I'm against adding all strings other then XBMC. Of course you are going to decide Big Grin

you don't want to, but you do?

as i said if they fit add them, if they don't then don't, but these are used for a feature of xbmc. weather plugin. which is kinda specific, not like your run of the mil video plugin.

blittan, i'm just about ready to release the weather skin for confluence, just want to know if i could localize with xbmc or if i need skin strings.

maybe i'm selfish, but i'd rather see those strings in the xbmc language file than having to add them to the skin language file. ;-)
if the weather.com plus plugin is going to be picked up by a lot of skins (and it should), then it would be madness to include the same set of strings in every skin's language file.

not sure if the plugin language file would be an option ?

in case they do get added to the xbmc language file, the 319xx id's should probably be changed (as they are reserved for skins).

script strings could only be used by me setting more properties.

the thing with some of these strings, they really are skin related. eg if your colum is wide enough for Precipitation or only Precip. or you may want chance precip, or chance[CR]precip, or precip %.

that's why it may be better to leave most of these in the skin. but if any eg miles and kilometers fit xbmc, then add them.

length of a string will always be an issue no matter what.
let's say Precipitation will just fit my label width, next someone comes along and does a Greek translation and it will become Precinipeitatilatilusion or whatever...

but i do agree with you having abbreviated strings in the xbmc language file is not a good idea.
same goes for capitalized strings, uppercasing should/could by handled by the skin.

If plugin's and scripts related strings added to XBMC it's difficult to publish or update from translators (unless you are a developer and have access to SVN).

Or maybe we can separate language package like ubuntu did it?

Just want to say please consider translators also before some changes.

Nuka: as you said, some of those strings are way too specific, I just want to add more generic ones.

queeup: I am considering translators, since we dont have to translate the same strings for 10 skins and 20 plugins.

these would be helpful as they have to be callable from the script, not the skin
<string id="71">Miles</string>
<string id="72">Kilometers</string>

you also already have:
<string id="33034">36 Hour</string>
<string id="33035">Maps</string>
<string id="33036">Hourly</string>
<string id="33037">Weekend</string>
<string id="33038">%s day</string>
<string id="33049">Alert</string>
<string id="33050">Alerts</string>
<string id="33020">Condition</string>
<string id="33021">Precipitation</string>
<string id="33022">Precip</string>
<string id="33023">Humid</string>
<string id="33024">Feels</string>
<string id="33025">Observed</string>
<string id="33026">Departure from normal</string>
<string id="33027">Sunrise</string>
<string id="33028">Sunset</string>
<string id="33029">Details</string>
<string id="33030">Outlook</string>
<string id="33003">Download</string>
<string id="33004">Download & play</string>
<string id="33005">Download & save</string>
<string id="33006">Today</string>
<string id="33007">Tomorrow</string>
<string id="33008">Saving</string>
<string id="33009">Copying</string>

so these seem to fit:
<string id="31905">Current</string>
<string id="31940">Pressure</string>
<string id="31941">Visibility</string>
<string id="31943">Statistics</string>

<string id="31926">Record Low</string>
<string id="31927">Observed High</string>
