Ok DONT know if i did this or what happend. But i went here http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Advancedsett...pfilter.3E reading about that "skiploopfilter" thing (im not a hacker but very stubborn) haha. Anyway this is what i did.

1.Downloaded the "advancedsettings.xml" file from
/Library/Application Support/XBMC/userdata/advancedsettings.xml

2. I set the number from 8 to 48 (which means "Skip all frames" )

3. Rebooted the whole Apple TV

4. Went into settings -> video -> playback

5. In here a new option just came out of nowhere called "Use Pixelbuffer Objects" and so i selected it and now this movie plays actully 10 times better than before. Not ultra smooth but it is watchble and almost not noticeble. Big Grin The resolution may not be as in Quicktime but atleast i can watch it.

Dont know if i did this, i just took a chance... I have only tested one movie so far but i needed to just post. Will come back with update on this.

@donut here is the info i get from Quicktime if that is of any help.

Format: H.264, 1280 x 720, AAC, Stereo (L R), 48,000 kHz
Movie-FPS: 23,98
Playing-FPS: 24
Size: 1.15 Gb
Speed: 2111.76 Kbit/s
Normal Size: 1280 x 720

Ok after testing on some movies its better than before but some movies drops frames from time to time, so not as smooth as one could hoped for.

Im kind of surprised over that there isnt a solution for this at all. So im guessing now my only option left is to decode all the movies in some way to be able to see them in XBMC, which im not going to do since they all play perfect EVERYWHERE else except in this software which i must say to the dev team is a big FAILURE.

I software that is ment to be a media center and the whole idea is based on playing movies and videos should have the best possible player, not the worst. Im not a specialist in these matters but i have tested my movies in QuickTime, VLC, WMP, iTunes and on Native ATV OS, NitoTV and Sapphire.. And none of the has any trouble.

This is NOT a hardware issue that some claims, just bad player within XBMC (since all other apps on ATV plays almost flawless).

Hope that the devs take on this criticism and do something about it. Apple TV may not be the biggest of platforms, but still a good platform for XMBC to be on in my opinion.

Ok seems like many people have been reading this thread and i have been on this all day today trying to figure out why i cant play my movies in XBMC.

Doing that thing with the "advancedsettings.xml" setting it to "48" fixes some issues with the playback. It doesnt stutter but i till have the framdrops. Feels almost like watching a movie over a bad lan connection eaven tho the movies are played from a USB HDD.

Is it becuse my movies are encoded with mp4, m4v and mov that causes this. Read somewhere here i think that having H.264 encoded movies in .MKV or .AVI doesnt have these issues..?

Anyway just wanted to update everyone who may be following this thread and may experience the same thing.

Im kind of frustrated now that i cant get it to work since i have started to like XBMC (except for this that is) Tongue But i have faced the fact now that im stuck using NitoTV for now. Hope to see a solution soon tho.

Cheers

I've found that ac3 and dts sound really bothers my apple tv, replace the ac3 with a normal stereo sound (mp3 or mp4a in my case) and now I have a flawless playback. I mean, really perfect. Haven't tried with 1080p, my tv reach only 720p.

Ok so i probobly did something wrong since i suck at this.. Anyway im one step closer since the picture now runs smoothly. BUT i have no sound.

I look inside the file in quicktime and i see the audio track there and i hear it when playing on my computer.

Inside XBMC when playing the movie i go into audio and subtitle settings and i see 3 sound options? wierd.. I sound source 2 and 3 works BUT then the stuttering starts again.

When i select soundsource 1 i get not stuttering and no sound.

Gonna do some more tests.

So i have tested 2 movies now with H.264 and 720p .mov files.

I manage to extract the audio from both files using quicktime and the converted them to simple stereo 480000/192 mp3 files and then added them back and saved.

Sound worked good and some improvements to the playback but still sluggish.

And since i need to have the "skiploopfilter" set to 48 the videoquality is verry poor.

I tried changing back to 8 as it is per default but that doesnt work at all. Its like looking at a slow buffering youtube video.. Not verry nice.

@superamina Thank you for you suggerstion but my playback is not eaven close to perfect after trying this method. Its better but not as good as i know it can be when i play it within ATV native software (Quicktime).
