I have Ubuntu 9.10 and a Radeon HD 4200. After installing the latest drivers and catalyst control center (xbmc worked extremely slow before), no image appears when I play movies, regardless of movie type (dvd, .avi, .mpg). The subtitles appears, the movie aspects ratio gets right and the movie screen changes color, and flickers. I guess the screen color is based on the movie information. I.e. a scene in a movie with mainly black background results in the screen turning black, a scene with red and green makes the screen turn into a red/green-color.

The movies plays perfect in both vlc and the internal movie player in Ubuntu.
I have tried changing from hdmi to vga, and changing the screen resolution as well as the freqency, with no result. All help is appropriated!

Thanks, it worked perfect! Would you mind giving me a brief explanation of what was wrong before (it was set to auto detect)?

It's because of a bug in the ati driver.
