My graphics card has gone kapput so I'm looking for a new one.

I always struggled with 1080p playback and i'm right in thinking it's now possible to offload to the graphics card? With that in mind what should I buy for optimal playback?

No-one got fired for buying NVIDIA. Go for a card that supports VDPAU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU).
