There is no home theather device capable of decoding multichannel AAC
So when you get a file like that you will always get a downmix to two channels which if you have dolby pro logic will come back with multichannel audio
Only with windows I believe you can have this translated into 6 discrete LPCM channels and output through a sound card with 6 speakers or an HDMI. Tos link optical will not support multiple discrete channels
The settings in XBMC should be AAC compatible decoder off and that should downmix the audio.
There is a known bug with AAC HE (SBR and PS set to on) for those files the only thing that seems to work is to set the downmixing on in the system settings before playing the file

hey dan

dont use ffdshow for audio. Its awesome for video but has always been lacking in audio.

Have you gone through MCE settings and set it to 5.1 output? If you have AC3filter should do the trick as I have had to install XP drivers myself for a few componenets. Just set your speaker setup as 3/2 SW and check the spdif box. Parental Control Software
