XBMC + Myth TV - best install ?
#1
I have just bought a Geforce 210 to slot into my HPTC. I was going to migrate from Windows to Linux.

I was going to run Myth TV ( for PVR ) with XBMC.

Should I do

(a) Install Mythbuntu and shove XBMC on top

or

(b) Install XBMC Live and add Myth TV on top?

Mythbuntu as a base. It's harder to get Myth working than XBMC and Mythbuntu makes at least part of that easier.
Use MythTV for recording TV? Try the integrated MythTV support in XBMC Media Center. Now with commercial skip support built-in and integration with the Movie database!

dont you only need to use the myth backend? so install xbmc-live then add the myth backend on top. although ive never used myth and xbmc together i have used them both seperately so, im just guessin that you'd only need the backend.

I second what dteirney said. This is exactly how I've set things up, and I must say mythbuntu was rather simple to configure.... there is a learning curve on configuring the mythbackend (not what I would call intuitive w/the sources/cards/channels/etc) but that's myth not mythbuntu.

@Kadafi69, yes you probably could install mythbackend on top of xbmc live, but I doubt it would be as straight forward as that. mythbuntu is really a rather svelte ubuntu install (not xbmc live svelte, but more like xubuntu svelte). It comes w/lirc & mythweb all configured & going strong. And having the mythfrontend to test things out and fall back to (xmbc myth support is still.... not 100% shall we say, although I'm not complaining). And like dteirney said, xbmc is TRIVIAL to install on top of mythbuntu (add source & apt-get install then launch how you like).

Short answer: mythbuntu + XBMC is what I use, I love & recommend. I have not tried Kadafi69's idea, maybe it is easy but I suspect not as easy.

Sorry to hijack a little, but I too have Myth and XBMC - I am running serveral frontends to one myth backend.

Do you use XBMC Videos to stream the live TV, or is there another, better way of doing this - I like the fact that I can look around the other channels on screen with info whilst looking at the current TV show, is there a combination that allows the same on XBMC?

I'm not all that bothered about the TV guide etc...as recording I usually set up via the MythWeb interface.

As far as just installing mythbackend, I tried that on a full Ubuntu 9.10 install. I ran into all kinds of trouble, after hours of frustration, I installed the full MythTv package and it was a breeze from there.

No, It would be nice feature if or when someone makes a plugin.

install XBMC from the LIVE cd.
then run:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mythtv mythweb mythbuntu-control-centre tightvncserver
then control everything from mythweb or at any time use the tightvncserver to access mythbuntu-control-centre (which is much better then the mythbuntu setup)

For the benefeit of being able to upgrade at any time and letting XBMC use the files directly instead of going through mythtv's slow interface, use mythicalLibrarian to add files to the library. It's really much quicker.
Code:
sudo apt-get install curl
mkdir ~/.mythicalLibrarian && mkdir ~/.mythicalLibrarian/mythicalSetup && cd ~/.mythicalLibrarian/mythicalSetup
curl [url]http://mythicallibrarian.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/mythicalSetup.sh[/url]>./mythicalSetup.sh
sudo chmod +x ./mythicalSetup.sh && sudo ./mythicalSetup.sh
The automated setup will take you through the steps

Then just select mythcialLibrarian to be run as a user job on each file. You will never need to look at mythtv or mythweb because XBMC will automatically recognize the files. It's much more efficient then using mythtv because XBMC queries the Mythtv interfaces, then the mythtv interfaces query the database, then mythtv accesses the file and then streams it to XBMC. Using mythicalLibrarian, XBMC accesses the file directly with no middle man and mythtv is still in control of the files.
Use mythicalLibrarian to make a library out of your MythTV files. Leave the recording to MythTV and use XBMC as your library.

OK - I tried installing Mythbuntu with the Wubi installer (I don't want to toast my Windows install just yet)

I ran into a problem straight away - my HTPC is outputting over HDMI at 1080p and there is a slight problem with overscanning on my Sony TV. When I try to install Mythbuntu I run into some dialog choices when installing for which the buttons are obscured. I assume there is some easy way around this?

I never used the Wubi installer, is there no way to change the resolution?

If you have room for another partition, you could dual bootNod

Hi,
I'm running pretty much latest stuff. Karmic with Nvidia 195 drivers.
When I try to install mythtv it basically uninstalls libvdpau1 and then complains about not having nvidia-195-libvdpau installed.
I'm then stuck on a failed dependency for libmyth-0.22-0.
As per outleradam I'm starting from a LiveCD install.
Can ask which nvidia drivers folks are using?
I'm trying to run all this from the one (ION) box.
Thanks.
