Odd subtitle problem
#1
I'm having a weird problem when displaying Vietnamese subtitles in XBMC.

Some certain characters are displayed as [] instead of f.ex á, é, í etc.

Anyone know a fix for this?

Hardware: Acer Aspire Revo
Architecture: i686
XBMC SVN: 9.11
Install Method: Installed to HDD via XBMC Live USB Flash utility

I've tried changing to the teletext font, tried different encoding settings, style (italics, bold) etc, but nothing seems to work. The default font is arial.ttf, so i assume it should be able to handle it.

Here is a sample:

Nó chạm trái đất với sức công
phá của 10.000 đầu đạn hạt nhân.

The letter ấ f.ex is only displayed as a small box, similar to []. This is incredibly annoying, and i can't find a workaround for this problem.

I've tried with XBMC 9.11 (Camelot) and now with XBMCFreaks latest release. Same problem.

Sure thing.

Here is the pastebin: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/435412/
Here is the subtitle file: http://jasse.net/arma.srt

Sample from subfile:
---------------------
1
00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:56,700
Đây là địa cầu vào thời
còn những con khủng long...

2
00:00:56,900 --> 00:00:59,400
một hành tinh màu mỡ và xinh tươi.

3
00:01:07,300 --> 00:01:12,600
Một tảng đá có bề ngang 9 km
đã thay đổi điều đó.

4
00:01:21,100 --> 00:01:24,800
Nó chạm trái đất với sức công
phá của 10.000 đầu đạn hạt nhân.

5
00:01:27,900 --> 00:01:32,300
Hằng tỉ tỉ tấn đất đá đã văng
ra bầu khí quyển...

6
00:01:32,600 --> 00:01:35,300
tạo một lớp bụi dầy đặc...

7
00:01:35,600 --> 00:01:37,900
mà mặt trời không thể xuyên qua...

8
00:01:38,100 --> 00:01:40,300
trong suốt cả ngàn năm sau đó.

Just upgraded to the latest SVN release and it still has the same problem.

Sorry, yes I did. Though I got the same results, I'm unsure of exactly what's causing it. If I open the srt file on my mac using Jubler the formatting is fine. I assume it's some sort of issue with Vietnamese text support in linux, but I'm not sure. I'll keep messing with it when I have time.

I just managed to fix it. I installed a different arial.ttf to the fonts dir and it worked fine.
