XBMC no sound
#1
Sad
I've searched and searched and have quite literally reinstalled xbmc 8 times trying different guides. I officially give up and ask for help .

I'm using XBMC Live 9.11 installed to my hard drive.

I have an a8n sli-deluxe with onboard sound and a audigy 2 zs. The onboard sound (analog 5.1) will be used to squeezebox and the audigy (digital 5.1) goes to my a/v receiver from xbmc. The receiver is capable of ac3/dts and if I disable the onboard sound and use plughw to specify the audigy, everything works.

However, disabling my onboard sound is not an option since the audigy goes crazy if I use both the analog and digital for two separate things at the same time. So, to use both xbmc and squeezebox at the same time, I need two audio devices.

Currently I have a nice fresh install but I added the following three lines to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to force the order of the cards.

options snd_emu10k1 index=0
options snd_mpu401 index=1
options snd_intel8x0 index=2

Current config:

Audio output: digital
ac3: y
dts: y
Audio output device: default
passthrough: iec958
downmix: n

debug logging: true
reboot

Tests:
x264 dolby digital - 5.1 passed correctly
xvid dolby digital - 5.1 passed correctly
xvid mp3 - no sound, receiver still is seeing 5.1 (incorrect) but no actual audio
x264 dts - 5.1 passed correctly
xvid ac3 - stereo passed correctly
x264 ac3 - 5.1 passed correctly
xvid mp3 - no sound, but receiver is seeing stereo (correct)
vc1 wmapro - no sound, receiver sees stereo (incorrect)
flac stereo - no sound
mp3 stereo - no sound
no navigation sounds

Now, what is really odd. I go disable debugging and try to replay a x264 dts sample and I get failure to initialize audio device.... ?!

Any help resolving these oddities? Obviously I don't want to have debugging on at all times while trying to use xbmc and I do want to be able to play music at times. I can attach any debug logs as well, but one for each sample seemed a bit excessive.

Thanks!!!

In the meantime I setup squeezeslave and it plays perfectly over the audigy 2 analog. So I attempted to make xbmc play over the nvidia onboard.

Audio output: digital
Audio output device: nvidia ck804 default.
Reboot

I have navigation and music, but over the audigy2 analog lines and NOT the onboard digital. What gives?

aplay -l shows nvidia looking like

Code:
card 2: CK804 [NVidia CK804], device 0: Intel ICH [NVidia CK804]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: CK804 [NVidia CK804], device 2: Intel ICH - IEC958 [NVidia CK804 - IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

so I attempt

audio output device: custom plughw:2,2
passthrough output device: custom plughw:2,2

reboot.

navigation sounds through the audigy analog, but no other sound......
xbmc.log shows that it never finds plughw:2,2 so it goes to default which I can only assume is the nvidia analog since I don't get the audio device not initialized error and the audigy analog plays nothing.

Any help?

interestingly I have a similar board the a8n sli. I have intermittent sound problems, trying to track them down before I reported them.

It "seems" if i have the tv on a different channel and start up xbmc sometimes i have no sound.

I'm trying various options in asoundconf and asoundrc but nothing yet.

I decided to start with the basics.

I disconnected the audigy and went with the coax spdif on the a8n. With xbmc not running there is no lock on the receiver which is to be expected. As xbmc starts however, there is still no pcm lock.

mplayer -vo null -ao alsa:device=iec958 Prelude.wav

causes the receiver to immediately lock on pcm, but no sound to play. I'm starting to think that alsa is fubar.

Any ideas?

I set the audio output device to default and the passthrough to custom plughw:0,0. I now get sound for anything that requires passthrough but no music, movies encoded with mp3, and no system sounds.

If I set the default audio device to the plughw:0,0 mp3 and non-passthrough still doesn't play and the receiver doesn't lock. Passthrough content still plays

Ok, I started over AGAIN.

xbmc live installed to hard drive.

I'm using the audigy card and while:

mplayer -vo null -ac hwac3,hwdts -ao alsa:device=iec958 /media/raid/Video/TV/sample.mkv

works perfectly xbmc does not

My sound is going out the audigy2 digital coax to a receiver.

Sound settings:

digital
ac3 checked
dts checked
audio output iec958
custom passthrough iec958
downmix unchecked

And I get a bunch of audio device cannot be initialized messages when testing.

I go ahead and reboot.

Everything is playing PERFECTLY!! Awesome!!!! So I start to edit this post and disable the debugging. I try to watch something that literally worked right before disabling debugging, and I get the same damn audio device cannot be initialized message. My neighbors had to have heard my cursing at the tv.

Navigation sounds still work crazily enough...

So I try to reboot again, maybe the craziness will repeat and I just won't enable debugging.....

Guess what, it works again.... WHAT?!

Why would it stop working as soon as debugging is disabled?!!?!?!? It's like it's taunting me.....

Either way, it's working now, next step is to re-enable the onboard sound. But first i'm taking a system backup in case things go south for some unknown reason....

Do you have any updates on this issue?

The solution for your onboard card was:

Set audio and pass-through to 'custom'
Type in "surround51:CARD=CK804,DEV=0" for audio device and pass-through.

The reason is that analog and digital is intern connected.

Maybe by translating it to you Audigy2 it will work to.
