CrystalHD performance and video resolution
#1
In terms of performance from the CrystalHD when running XBMC for Mac on a Mac Mini, does the video resolution setting on the Mac Mini have an impact on the level of performance from the CrystalHD decoder?

Here's some info on my setup:

I have a 1.66ghz Core Duo Mac Mini with OS X 10.6.3 installed. XBMC For Mac r28256 with CrystalHD 1.0.3 is installed.

I am outputting to a 720p Vizio LCD TV. The TV has a native resolution of 1366x768. It can also scale to 1080i.

I have cables to do DVI->HDMI or DVI->VGA.

If I use HDMI, the Mac Mini lets me choose 720p and 1080i. In 720p setting, it runs 1280x720 resolution but I am unsure what it runs when the Mac Mini is setup to 1080i.

When I connect DVI->VGA, I can select standard monitor resolutions as well as 1366x768.

In general, I've noticed no playback issues on short 5 min or less samples of 720p and 1080p MKV's when I use HDMI or VGA and 720p, 1080i or 1366x768 settings. Activity Monitor shows CPU usage is similar in all of these settings from XBMC.

No. 1080i is a stupid setting in the first place. Who wants an interlaced display ? Pick 720p and that's what you get.

Very true. Since my cheapier Vizio LCD doesn't support native resolution over HDMI, OSX itself looks fairly port in 1280x720 when I use HDMI. (compared to 1366x768 when I use VGA). Is there any downside to using VGA in terms of video playback/crystalhd/xbmc etc?

I had the same problem with my mac-mini and my Philips 42" 720p TV.
You need SwitchResX in order to get 1366x768 into your preference.

So this would let me select 1366x768 when using DVI->HDMI cable?

Yes, it will make possible to add that resolution to be set on preference.
