[LINUX] Apple TV Upgrade to 10.04? Pros and cons
#1
So as I play around with XBMC on Ubuntu 8.04 I'm finding audio over HDMI more annoying and useless by the day. I'm wondering is that happens to be the only caveat should one use 9.10 or 10.04?

Quote:That said, setting up Linux can be a bit tricky. If you want sound over HDMI, you have to use at least alsa-driver-1.0.18a and NVIDIA 100.14.19 drivers that compile only on Ubuntu 8.04.

If so.. what version will compile under 10.04 and will HDMI video + Optical audio continue to work as it currently does? I could always find out for myself (I probably will later) but I imagine others have already tried this.

10.04 is a real pig and would need to go on a diet. see http://groups.google.com/group/atv-bootl...a0902e3c3a .

Remember, there's no reason to install the latest ubuntu, 8.04 works just fine.

stick with hardy heron. if it works don't break it - or if you must, backup first. Karmic should be fine but 10.04 is new and will probably cause issues.

I have a couple 2.5 IDE HDs to play around with so it'll just be tinkering. Nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for the link Davilla, I'm reading through it now

8.04 runs awesome. only problem with 8.04 is, that sshcs builds wont work out of the box. libmysqlclient_16 is not available on 8.04

everything else runs perfect. 8.04 on appletv users need to compile their own svn xbmc.

People actually use menu sounds? Wink

It's been the first thing I turn off on every install since they added it as a feature.

mine will work if not connected via HDMI. But truth be told i've never bothered to persue the issue for beeps and clicks. As long as audio for video + music is working i'm happy.

kcarney and trevor, i think the custom audio settings don't apply for menus, so you must create a default HDMI device so xbmc can pipe sound through it.
