After downloading the latest svn release of XBMC I have found that the skins now live in the addons folder and that skin.xml now needs to be addon.xml.

I want to run Showmix with the svn release where can I get the addon.xml for the Showmix skin or is there a quick guide to show how to create addon.xml?

just copy the one from confluence and edit it to reflect the skin your using ie the name of the skin etc pop this file into the root of your skin, also rename your skin folder skin.Aeon Showmix or whatever it is. fire up xbmc and activate the skin in the addons.

you should now be able to switch skins in the normal way.
