How do you correlate the artist to the fanart?

This is what I'm working on. It's my whole house iPad remote control. I set up an Apache server running perl which queries the XBMC database directly and returns the information I need in a format that is easily parsed by my GUI. However, I'm having difficulty trying to figure out how to correlate the fanart to the artist. When a given artist, album from an artist, or currently playing is showing I want to put the FanArt in the background like so.
