Sound problem now solved.

I found a setting on the TV which was set to push the sound to 'HDMI', i changed this setting to 'RGB / PC' and the sound came on....

Also, advice regarding the amplifier taken on board. I'd like something a little smaller however but i'll take a good look at the Onkyo range.
