XBMC crashing to shell while playing video stream
#1
When I try to play a Netflix movie via my Mediamall PlayOn streaming server, XBMC crashes to login shell... it seems to happen at an arbitrary time. I have an XBox running XBMC that can play the Netflix movies via PlayOn without crashing so I don't think its the PlayOn box. Any suggestions?

Linux XBMCLive 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 05:23:09 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

This is the xbmcfreak911livev14 ISO that I installed to the HD on an Acer Aspire Revo R1600.

There is no core, but I have two crash logs.

I have tried to get a core file but won't create one. I did the ulimit -c unlimited and restarted xbmc-live but still no core even though XBMC has clearly crashed.

Do you have gdb installed? That should allow for the crash dump to provide the necessary backtrace.

When I try to install gdm with apt-get, it wants to remove xbmc-live. I accidentally had that happen and I had to apt-get xbmc-live which seems to remove gdm... so I am not sure what is going on with that.

And since I have not gotten a core dump yet, I don't have something for gdm to analyze.

gdb, not gdm.

I think the xbmc script may remove the cores after it automatically gets the backtrace.

If you want, run xbmc.bin manually from shell (after you set ulimit -c unlimited).

When it crashes, you should then see the core.

Sorry, I meant gdb.

Ok, after a great deal of apt-get -f install, apt-get upgrade, etc... I managed to get gdb and xbmc-live installed at the same time. A new crash log file with a stacktrace was created.

And here is yet another crashlog with stack trace:

I have tried different skins but they have all crashed: Confluence, PM3.HD, PMIII (because this is what I use on the xboxes).

I am beginning to think I should have stayed with my xboxes since they play Netflix thru PlayOn without crashing. Surely I can't be the only one who uses PlayOn/Netflix with XBMC?

You might want to try a newer build as it may well be fixed. Make sure you back up your userdata prior to doing so.

If it's not fixed in a newer build, post a report on trac with your crashlog attached.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Looks to be a problem in the UPnP library - I presume you can reproduce at will?

If so, what upnp server are you using, and how can someone else reproduce this?

To reproduce you need both a Mediamall PlayOn license (they have a trial: http://www.playon.tv/playon/download) and a Netflix account (they also have a trial: http://www.netflix.com). PlayOn only runs on a windows box. Then connect XBMC to your Playon upnp server and try to play a Netflix movie or TV show. Always crashes for me... usually within the first 20 minutes.

I have this same problem. Happens every time I try to play a Hulu show through PlayOn, and just like teresa it usually happens about 15-20 mins in.

I had this problem with camelot and tried several different versions of ubuntu as well as several different versions of xbmc. I filed a trac ticket here:

http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/8599

But nothing came of it. I eventually gave up and decided to wait for dharma.

Tried the beta release of dharma today and am still seeing the same behavior.
