Possible to output 5.1 Ch digital audio & 2 Ch analog at same time?
#1
I am using the USB Ubuntu image in this thread to run XBMC on my Apple TV. As such I wasnt sure if this question belongs there or here, but since the background is Ubuntu I figured better here.

I have my setup connected via a video & audio distribution to both digital audio endpoints (optical) and stereo endpoints (rca). Is it possible to output *both* digital audio (5.1) AND stereo audio at the same time?

yes, others have done it. there's a long thread about that in this section of the forums (I think). Have to do some ALSA tricks.

Is this the thread you were referring to:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...ltaneously

It does discuss how to do digital + analog simultaneously over SPDIF, which would be ok as a secondary option for me, but what I am going for is digital over SPDIF and analog over the stereo RCA simultaneously. I havent been able to find any threads discussing that.

There is also this thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=62919
That could theoretically work with 3 outputs although it is a bit over my head. Ill give it a shot though and post here if I figure anything out.

Dont get your hopes up, my first experience with Linux/Ubuntu was this weekend and I havent programmed anything since C++ for a class in 1991. Smile

Im still not sure it is even possible to do what I want, if anyone can confirm that would be great. The other threads all have found ways to output analog sources over HDMI+SPDIF, and digital sources over HDMI.

Essentially here is what I want to do:

If source is DTS/AC3:
Output digital or passthrough via SPDIF *AND* simultaneously downmix and output analog via RCA
If source is Analog:
Output analog via both SPDIF and RCA.

That *AND* above is the big question mark.

Ok, lots more searching and I found THIS:

It seems like that should do it, Ill give it a shot tonight if I have time.

I posted this in the USB Ubuntu XBMC on ATV image thread but since I mentioned it here Ill post my progress question here also:

I am having a bit of an issue changing my ALSA driver from 1.0.19 to 1.0.21. I am trying to get audio working on all outputs simultaneously based on a post in an old thread using the following instructions:

Quote:Get rid of ALSA, Pulseaudio and ALSA-Utils by "sudo apt-get autoremove pulseaudio alsa-base alsa-utils".
Then get following packages by apt-get:

- ncurses-dev
- libncursesw5-dev
- xmlto (installs the whole TeX-stuff, abut 500MB)

Next, get the sources of alsa-driver 1.0.21, alsa-utils 1.0.21 and alsa-lib 1.0.21a and compile them.

To download and compile the drivers I used the instructions here:
http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/0...unty-9-04/

After I got through everything though I did the version check and it still says 1.0.19... no idea why. Anybody who understands linux and has an idea what I did wrong please let me know.

EDIT: Actually even though the version is still 1.0.19 I have noticed one change/improvement. Previously if I changed output to 'analog' from digital there would be no line-out sound, UNLESS I stopped what was playing and went from the home menu into video settings and made the change, then restarted the movie. Now, however, I can toggle between digital and analog while the movie is playing and it switches on the fly, but I still cannot have both work simultaneously. Is there a way to change XBMC settings themselves so it thinks it needs to output both digital and analog as opposed to in the menu where you have to choose one or the other?

Here are 2 other pages I found that may be helpful, but I dont know how to edit it to apply to ATV:
