XBMC can't authenticate to shares @ Windows 7 computer
#1
Hi all,

This is kind a continuation of an old thread, originally @ XBMC for Xbox support forum (now locked):

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=54605

That topic is about a login problem when the share is in a computer running Windows 7. It was posted in XBOX support forum, but in my personal experience it also affects Linux (in my case I can't authenticate from XBOX and Linux to a Windows 7 computer).

To solve the issue, all that was needed is uninstall "Windows Live - sign in assistant". Unfortunately, there is a bad news: the problem is back with the new Windows Live Beta (v15.3.2804.0607).
The worst news: there isn't a "Windows Live - sign in assistant" to remove any more!!!! The only solution was switch back to last Windows Live stable and remove the v15.3.2804.0607. That sux, since I did liked the new beta version Sad

Anyone has other solution to the XBMC x Windows 7 share issue?

Cheers.

I believe it is fixed in the svn. Have you tried updating?

I tested a SVN today in linux (PRE-10.5 R32246, compiled Jul 28 2010) and other in XBOX (XBMC 2010-07-08 SVN rev30442).
Neither authenticated in Windows 7 running "Windows Live Essentials Beta".

Then I removed all additional software, installed together with Live Essentials Beta, to see if any of them was the "guilt":

Windows Live Sync Active X Control for Remote Connections
Windows Live Provider for Microsoft Outlook Social Connector
Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector
Microsoft Default Manager

Didn't make any difference. Still unable to authenticate. The only solution was uninstalling Windows Live Essentials Beta.

Cheers.

I've tested again, this time running XBMC Dharma beta 2 @ Ubuntu, and can't authenticate to a computer running Windows Live Essentials 2011 (build 15.4.3502.0922).

So, it wasn't fixed. The biggest problem is that Live 2011 is no longer beta, so, it is the only version you can install at the moment. This means you can't log from XBMC @ linux to a share in windows computer with messenger.

cheers.

Edit - opened a ticket: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/10404

I can't believe it's been 3 months and this problem still has not been solved. I would like this to be solved a.s.a.p because this problem will is world wide now as the windows live 2011 is not in beta any more.

Get the latest build of XBMC to solve this issue.

You can download a newer XBMC build from here:

http://malus.exotica.org.uk/~buzz/xbmc/x...batest.zip

Or you can get the newest build here, but you have to register first. Go to the Downloads section (on top menu) and search for XBMC:

Yes I tested it. I had been searching for days for a solution to the authentication issue with Windows 7 until I found the forum with the link to the sambatest file, which contains the fix (http://www.msghelp.net/showthread.php?tid=95253). I installed it and it solved the issue, then I downloaded the latest build from Eurasia (8/31/2010 build). Now it authenticates and streams the files from the PC to XBMC like it should Smile
You just download either the sambatest zip file or the Eurasia latest build, unzip it, and upload the unzipped folders/files inside the XBMC folder to the xbox's C drive (except the UserData folder, so you keep your current xbox settings) replacing the rest of the files already in the xbox.

The Live Essentials problem isn't an XBMC problem. It's a Samba problem. I think it's a bug with Live Essentials and not Samba's fault. So you're complaining to the wrong people. There's a lot of stuff out there if you use your Googling skills.

Odd... I can mount any partition using linux's samba (mount.cifs, mount.smbfs etc.). No problem at all.
The problem is only when try to use SMB feature in XBMC.

I had the same issues, but not with a xbox. This is with XBMC live boxes trying to connect to Win 7. After reading online somewhere that Windows live essentials needs to be deleted I managed to share my windows pc right away.

I don't understand how that app does it.

It is "problem" of windows security. It is necessary to change Windows 7 local policies. These helped me:

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy*

Local Policies - Security Options*

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level*
Send LM & NTLM responses*

Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP*
(Disable) Require 128-bit encryption*

Have a nice day
