XBMC hackintosh, killa sample?
#1
Hi All,

I have a hackintosh that using 9400M vidoe card. it can play some of x.264 mkv movie with hardware acceleration, I also tried apple 1080p movie trailer, no problem. But when I play killa sample (birds), it will not use vda. I was looking for log file, but since I'm new in XBMC on Mac, don't know where to looking.

Any help?

Thanks

why even bother with this file? I really can't find a reason why people are so exited to have it played perfectly.

Don't kill yourself over it. OSX's backend is tweaked to accelerate x264, not VC1 like the killa sample. Since all of Apple's iTunes movies use x264 that is all they have cared about since the AppleTV days.

If you want to test your hackintosh for x264, got rip the Avatar Blu Ray. The file produced is really an x264 monster- I use it to test all my machines. I will admit I have not tried it on my ION Hackintosh Netbook though, maybe I will soon...

Killa is not VC1, it's h.264 but with 16 reference frames. VDA cannot handle it, nor can CrystalHD or OpenMax. Software ffmpeg or vdpau (nvidia/linux) are the only things that can play it.

Try this file for testing:
Earth 2007 1080p BluRay x264 [email protected]

It peaks at 30Mbit and is within all normal specs of h264
[email protected]

If you can smoothly play the birdscene in this file you can play any file that is within the h264 specs

So, VDA on Linux can handle it, but not VDA on MAC?

VDA != VDPAU. VDA is an OSX API for hardware video decode. VDPAU is a Linux API for hardware video decode. They both target nvidia GPU chipsets but do not have the same capability.
