I am getting conflicting answers about XBMC and its ability to handle Blu ray and DVD iso's some say yes some say no

I have tried adding a dvd iso file straight from desktop with no luck at all wont read it. I would like the menu ability but its not a deal breaker. Just curious to see what the best option out there is... for getting regular dvd's and blu rays to show up??

Also when playing regular dvd's will xbmc upconvert it automatically or will that have to be done via external hardware?
