[LINUX] Is this system not fast enough for 1080p MKV?

Hi,

I have a computer with these specs:

RAM:

PNY 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model MD2048KD2-667

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820178134

Video Card:

XFX PVT71PUDP3 GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support EXTREME Video Card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814150202

Motherboard:

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813128012

CPU:

Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 2.66GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Dual-Core Processor BX80551PE2666FN

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819116001

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CPU is overclocked at 3.33 GHz

I'm running XBMC 9.11 (I think - whichever one comes with this http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_insta...ep-by-step link) on Linux Mint 9 and 720p MKV playback is fine, but I can't seem to get smooth 1080p MKV playback. It stutters pretty badly and I've looked around and installed the NVIDIA drivers (that Mint suggested I install - the 'Recommended' version) and enabled VDPAU in the playback settings.

Is the video card/cpu simply not good enough for 1080p playback?

I'm not really sure if it's the computer or if it's just a driver or settings issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Please let me know if you need me to post any debug info or anything like that (and how to get that info).

Thanks.

I have a 7900 GS that sits on my shelf for that exact reason. With the right cheap Nvidia card this is a 1080p box.
