Dropping FPS and crashing debug log playing both mkv and avi (possibly VDA related)

ix400 Wrote:... I just found out that not all VC1 encoded files cause the choppy playback problem. It seems that the 'Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles' are also encoded in VC1 (source for extracting the mkvs were the german BDs).

Playback of these mkvs is quite smooth, just a little hick-up once in a while.

Chris

VDA decoder only handles h264. Any VC1 content will get decoded with ffmpeg.

...okay.

Tomorrow I'm going to put the mediainfo files of

- Astronaut Farmer
- Terminator Salvation
- Sarah Connor chronicles

on my dropbox. All three are VC1, but only the latter one can be played smoothly on my mini 2010.

Maybe from the mediainfo files it becomes obvious what the the reason might be for this.

Cheers,

Chris

...sorry, but this post is bollocks.

Astronaut Farmer and Terminator Salvation are both encoded in AVC. Anyway, these files are an example for the broken HW acceleration in 10.6.4.

- 10.6.3 without acc.: choppy playback
- 10.6.3 with acc.: files are played silky smooth
- 10.6.4 without acc.: very choppy
- 10.6.4 with acc.: also choppy

Just wanted to correct what I wrongly posted.

Regards,

Chris

Hi davilla,

any news on the loaner mini 2010? Did you already get it?

I'm very interested in your 'hands on' experience with one of the new minis.

Cheers,

Chris

... in the case you live in northern germany we could make an appointment for the next weekend. You could run some tests on my mini 2010.

But I guess you live somewhere else, don't you? The world's too big.

I have submitted a bug report to apple. Actually I used both links:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebO.../wa/signIn

I have sent the report using both links.

Please, can do everyone who is encountering the same problem on the mini 2010 do the same?

We need to inform Apple about the problem, and the more people chime in the more likely it gets that the problem will be fixed some day.

Cheers,

Chris

... after using XBMC for a couple of weeks now, the main question for me is:

WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I DO THIS EARLIERHuh

XBMC is so damn cool, super functional. Almost no issues for me.

The only real downside is this stupid bug in 10.6.4. Today I've tested the newest 10.6.5 beta (10H548), and the bug is still not fixed.

Right now, I have the feeling that it will never be fixed... but I'm still hoping that Apple is proofing me wrong.

Got to install 10.6.3 now...

Nice weekend,

Chris

Ok,

Downloaded 10.6.3. Did a clean install. SABNZB and XBMC only, no OSX or any other updates from Apple installed. A clean 10.6.3 from internet.

DVA off = no frames dropped what so ever, except 1 during start file. The only time frames are dropped is when CPU gets above 98%.

DVA on = frames dropped. 1080p or 720p. 1080 is worse. dropped frames and CPU seems no relation. What does seem a relation is fast image difference. Say light to dark or scene changes in a movie with high contrast., indoor outdoor.

I think that the log says this when frames are dropped:

if you see this "avcodec_decode_video" that's ffmepg doing the decode, not VDA decoder.

I am also occasionally getting the following when the video playback on the TV would stumble/stutter for a fraction of a second:

Any thoughts on the skipping part ? or is more info required like logs and or specs ?
