IMHO, in the same way you can use a chalk innovatively.

My children are homeschooled and my wife and I have collected a moderate amount of videos that pertain to school subjects that we have the kids watch throughout the year. Those videos are stored on the Media server and we have a separate source set up for instructional videos. When it's time for them to watch a video pertaining to a lesson, they fire up their laptop and browse to the video through xbmc. (Although admittedly it's a bit time consuming to create .nfo files for these videos as they don't exactly have a scraping source.)

That's one use so far... I haven't thought of other ways to use xbmc to aid with the kids' studies.
