Plex, which is alot more similar to xbmc than vlc, is allready availiable for osx aswell as ios devices, allowing all your osx and ios devices to connect to one, unified library. Im hoping eventually xbmc takes the same aproach. If the atv gets an appstore, its certainly possible.

Plex uses their closed source Plex Media Server to transcode content for their iOS clients and they also require an API key to enabled it from their so called "open platform api". StreamToMe can do the same as well as 3-4 other implementations. Nothing new here, move along Smile

iFixit Unveil the hardware of the new apple tv....
Do you think can play 1080p with that hardware?

No, it's the same everything as the iPad minus the dock connector, accelerometer and screen. iTunes/Netflix/YouTube 720p is as close as you're gonna get... basically it's as powerful as the first-gen AppleTV. Except there's no Mini-PCIe slot for some crystal lovin'.

Also, since this is an ARM chip that runs iOS, you'll more than likely never see XBMC running on this. It's currently not possible and would require a full porting to the ARM architecture. Maybe this is the catalyst needed to get new developers to focus on porting XBMC to ARM, maybe not. But think about it this way, the second you see XBMC/Boxee/Plex running on a iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone, it'll work on the new ATV.

Remember the Google Summer of Code port of XBMC to the Beagle Board? No iOS, but it's on an ARM core. And it works. Still needs a lot more development though.

Philmatic Wrote:I should have clarified that I meant "within the iOS environment", ARM is fine, but rewriting or otherwise getting iOS to run as an "App" within iOS and using Apple's SDK (Both public and private API's) is never going to happen unless some genius finds a way emulate SDL in iOS at full speed. Tongue

Why emulate SDL when you have EGL available Smile Both Beagle and Tegra2 branches are using EGL and SDL is only providing an easy way to get the window context. Otherwise, SDL only provides event handling (keyboard/mouse) and some other bits that are replaceable.

I deleted my post when I realized that SDL is a small part of XBMC development, not to mention that it ALREADY RUNS in iOS.

So SDL/EGL is available, XBMC has been ported to ARM (Initially, I know) and unsigned code in iOS is obviously possible, so the only technical hurdle is the hardware not being powerful enough for 1080p, although that hasn't been conclusively proven or tested at all.

I expect a port this evening. Tongue

just got the new AppleTV. I was surprised to see how tiny the thing is and works well with Netflix. Although without the power of XBMC it is severely lacking. Has anyone got XBMC to run on the new ATV?
