AirPlay target support integrated into XBMC natively?

Apple have announced they're extending the AirTunes protocol with video, which will be known as AirPlay.

Depending on if they (a) release it, or (b) someone reverse-engineers it, it would be good to see XBMC support this protocol, so you could start watching a video on a device and then move playback to your XBMC machine.

Would be great to see this happen. I'm hoping Apple make the Airplay spec publicly available. Another use would be to stream Audio from XBMC to an Airport Express or future Airplay hardware. We'll have to wait and see when iOS 4.2 comes out.

Hmmm, I've not googled the current apple device landscape, but from what I've just seen on the forums we can't even emulate an airtunes device yet - based on that I can't see it extending to video any time soon(ish)

It's uncertain if AirPlay API will be freely available for 3party SW. However, based on available (unofficial) informations, it seams that AirPlay will NOT be chained to iTunes.Wink

Probably need a license... Question is how expensive that is or if Apple will even grant it to an open source project. Money could be gathered like for the DVD playback feature if amount is not astronomical

The protocol is reverse-engineered:

There is AirPlay output plugin for XMMS2:

Should be possible make XBMC support this by porting the XMMS2 plugin.

Hmm, interesting. Afaict from that blog thing though is that its only audio thats reversed but I might be wrong (haven't looked to hard tbh). Have downloaded the code from xmms2 and it sadly seems like there is no library for it, just plain code. Might need to discuss with those developers about making it a proper library instead which we both could use.

At any rate, it should be possible to add in xbmc I would bet but afaik no developer has any hardware using this technology. Please consider donating for that cause and perhaps we will take a look, might be a nice feature if possible.

Cheers,
Tobias

"Well Im gonna download the code and look at it a bit but I'm certainly not a really good C/C++ programer but I'd help as much as I can, I mostly write in C#."

Davilla has a atv2, which does Airplay too! Maybe he's interested in this as well?

The protocol has been reversed engineered and made open source for AirTunes (previous version of AirPlay). But the problem is the communication is encrypted with yet-to-be discoverd key. iOS devices simply refuse to communicate with the open source protocol because of this security check.

This has to be solved before xbmc can "emulate" itself as a AirportExpress and act as a target for AirTunes/AirPlay

Dont expect anythng soon Sad
