Really, mine is in a cabinet and I don't hear a sound from it - I used to have my macbook in there as well and I could here the fan going just scrolling through my library - also, the mac mini seems to run cooler than the macbook as well - this is the new unibody macbook.

Strange we are having such different experiences

Mine is out on the top of a dresser in the bedroom, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

Did you notice any picture improvement on DVD rips?

Yeah...because I switched to ripping BluRays . I went from an AppleTV to 2010 MacMini, so my improvements were smoothness.

Mine is sitting in the open to the left of me. When watching a movie, you wouldn't know its there anyway. But when compiling, or browsing I still hear nothing (distracting at least).
