[Apple TV] Audio Buffer Underrun
#1
Apple TV latest (3.0.2)
Launcher (3.2.5)
XBMC (Last 2 Nightlies r33324 ?)
SMB connected via Western Digital Sharespace
HDMI to TV
Optical to 5.1 Amp
No CrystalHD

Brand New ATV
About 4 Mins in to any (well any of the 3 or 4 avi's I have tried) the screen freezes, initially I can still access the OSD (although pause/stop etc don't actually function) after a while I can't even bring that menu up. It still responds to a remote reset (Menu+Down buttons)

Logs seem to suggest a problem with the audio buffer. (pasting that error below, and yes I can paste complete log if required)

I have disabled the atv screensaver

I have tried changing audio settings on both ATV and XBMC, I noted that the audio settings on xbmc don't actually seem to change anything is that expected?

I have disabled skin sounds (was suggested in a post somewhere deep in these forums for a similar issue)

Suppose the next step is upping the audio buffer? I recall having those options in prior xbmc setups (not Mac or ATV), but can't see it in any obvious places now?

Any suggestions please? thanks.

Looks more like the avi causes ffmpeg to barf which drains the queues.

Thanks for the response, any suggestions on how to remedy? That file was an episode of scooby doo, nothing fancy.

Scooby-Doo - Mystery Incorporated.S01E07.In Fear of the Phantom.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

The other video I tried last night was an episode of Rubicon which is also xvid/mp3

Rubicon.S01E06.Look.to.the.Ant.HDTV.XviD-FQM.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

Just switched to nfs mounts and I get the same error but this time xbmc seems to be able to recover and stutters a little then resumes.. Wondering if this is possibly network related?

Interestingly nfs wouldn't work until I turned jumbo frames off on the nas.

I thought everything your network has to be running jumbo frames for that to work without pain.

Copy a video to the local disk and play from that to eliminate network issues.

I found Rubicon.S01E06.Look.to.the.Ant.HDTV.XviD-FQM.avi and played it. Playback was perfect and used about 20 percent CPU from atv(linux) over ethernet using the file located on a remote Linux SMB server.

Wow! that is beyond the call of duty, I hope you like the show at least Smile

I had a chance to play some of the files directly off the atv's disk this morning and they worked flawlessly. I am pointing my finger at the Western Digital NAS that thing has gig ethernet and manages to achieve less throughput than a wet piece of string.

The box the atv is replacing (xtreamer) was playing 10-20GB 1080p mkv's just fine from the same NAS though, so I think it is perhaps just needs some smbd/nfsd tuning to play better with the atv.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

np, Rubicon is on my watch list Smile It was interesting to see such a low rez video playback on my 1080p HDTV. Quality was quite good without fancy upscaler games.

Ever make additional progress on this problem? I believe I'm hitting the exact same issue.

I've used an original xbox running t3ch for ages upgrading as possible over a wireless connection to an HP media smart server. Then I recently purchased an AppleTV, modified it with the 9.11 xbmc. First few days, playback was great, watched a few movies, and a number of tv episodes.

Since then, I get maybe 4-6 minutes into a video, and it hard freezes. Same symptoms, can get to osd a few moments, but play/pause won't work, then it disappears entirely. Recovery mode via menu- seems to be the only way to get it back.

It seems unlikely it'd be either the network or the media server given that it worked like a champ for a very long time prior to the AppleTV.

Appreciate any additional insight.

Thanks,

Vengent
