About
Samba for iPhone/iPod Touch allows you to see your device as a network drive on your computer (and you can copy / change / stream files from / to it).

I'm in the same situation... iPhone here..

Here's what I've come up with and what may be down the road..

So far the only thing that has worked is PlayOn, they have a new webapp for the iPhone.. but then again, PlayOn is Windows only.. :-(

PogoPlug will do transcoding to iPhone, but I've heard bad reviews because the Plug is very limited hardware wise and transcoding is SLOW...

TonidoPlug.. they have an app in the approval phase in the App store.. their web page said video streaming was possible.. however with their web app it doesn't work.. I'll try again if the real app is approved.. I'm buying the TonidoPlug anyway as it's pretty bad ass..

This one I haven't tried but should work.. UnRaid.. by lime technology.. won't do you much good unless you ditch your current storage solution and go to UnRaid but I already have an UnRaid server.. there is an add on that will do transcoding to iPhone..

I will say that UnRaid is awesome so if you NEED a raid solution, I would highly recommend it.. the only reason I haven't tried AirVideo add on is my UnRaid server has a puny cpu..

One last possibility is VLC also has an app waiting approval from Apple in the app store.

as an alternative solution, you can also use iStreamdev to stream any movie format to your iphone.

It's a json/php script i've made based on ffmpeg/segmenter using live http streaming protocol of iPhone.

You only need apache with php & ffmpeg. And it's made forlinux.

You can deactiveate VDR features in the config file and only use the file part.
But with vdr enabled you can also stream you tv channels to your iphone.

Feel free to mod it to your needs too as it's open source.

I'm in a similar situation, all my movies and TV shows are on my (relatively underpowered) Linux server, and I like to stream MKVs and Divx files over 3G to my iPhone, without leaving my Windows box on 24/7.

The solution that works for me is the Air Video server running on my Windows box coupled with Wake on LAN so I can put the Windows machine to sleep when it's not being used. The Windows machine and my server are both connected via gigabit LAN and there's no lag on that end.

Since any video streaming solution going to the iPhone will require real-time transcoding because of Apple's codec limitations, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to have the transcoding handled by your server's CPU anyway.

The only real bottleneck in this solution is AT&T's ridiculously crappy service in the NYC area, which causes stops and stutters during peak hours.

Veovis Wrote:Bad news, it seems that Air Video also requires a server bit, which also does not run on Linux. .

AirVideo does have a Linux (beta) server. I have it running on my unRAID box. Here's the thread I started over at the unRAID forum:

If you follow the thread through you'll see that I got it working manually before far more knowledgable users simplified it.....

Cheers

almost the same question asked here:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=81212

But here is the answer:

if you want to stream video from your pc or mac to your iphone look up " AirVideo " in the app store. There is a small download for you pc or mac that runs the services to stream. It will convert almost any type of video on the fly and play it on your iphone. Oh and it's only 2.99 in the app store

only one tiny little problem there... WINDOWS... what if you don't have/want a pc or mac and want to do it all linux based.
