I noticed in a few of my video files that the subtitles show up just fine when using Media Player Classic with DirectVobSub, but for some reason XBMC cannot find the subtitle track.

is it because it's contained within the video file itself and not in an independent srt file or anything?

When playing a file, call up the On Screen Display - keyboard press 'm' - navigate to the audio section and make sure subtitles have been enabled.

yeah. subtitles are indeed enabled. weird. it's an .avi file if that helps.
