Unable to arrive at GUI [live]

Sad
Problem: It boots, but doesn't really get much further than booting. I arrive at a command line where none of the commands work. I think the error may be "pwconv: failed to change the mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600". This is explained in slightly more detail in my explanation below.

1. "Latest" is NOT a revision, of ANYTHING!
Version 9.11 of the Live distro running from CD drive.

2. Linux Distribution and Version
Not applicable, running from an empty computer.

3. Architecture
32 bit Pentium 4 processor, 256 MB ATI graphics, 4GB usb.

4. Install Method (PPA, RPM, build.sh, manual, other)
Not applicable, didn't get to installing.

5. SVN Revision (See below.)
Can't get. Don't know how (read instructs, I never arrived at a GUI therefore fail.)

6. Detailed Instructions to Reproduce the Problem
Turn the computer on with the live CD in the drive, boot from cd. Get a very pretty loading screen. Loading ceases/finishes, leaving me with a screen saying:
Code:
pwconv: failed to change the mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600
sudo: unknown user: user
sudo: unknown user: user

Ubuntu 9.10 XBMCLive tty1

XBMCLive login:

I was then prompted for a username and password. Rather, an "XBMCLive login" and "password". After searching the forums and wiki for a while, I stumbled across the painfully obvious answers of "xbmc" and "xbmc".
Both of which were typed in and then enter was pressed.

I am then greeted by a screen displaying the build date of the distribution and explaining that Ubuntu is free and the warranty/copyright rights I have.

Below this is a command line, reading "xbmc@XBMCLive:~$"

7. FULL Debug Log << NOT OPTIONAL!
Sorry, I can't get one. I hope you can still help.

9. Compiler Output (Only useful if XBMC doesn't build. See below.)
Can't get either. No objects "can be found", commands not found, and directories not found.

the pwconf message is completely normal. my best guess would be that X fails to start because of your ATI card. please try again with dharma beta2 live.
