So what exactly are the required / recommended hardware specs to run XBMC as my HTPC on a windows XP platform?

Depends on what you want to playback.

If you just want it to do as much as an Xbox (aka SD content like divx) then any old Pentium 4 with a Geforce 2 in it can technically run the interface and playback divx.

If you want HD stuff (Blu Ray rips, mkvs), then you need a 2.6GHZ Core2Duo to do it in Windows XP and any old Geforce 2.

If you want HD stuff and you want GPU decoding (aka the modern way to do things) you need to either upgrade to Windows 7 or get XBMC Live as Windows XP lacks DXVA2 support. In Windows 7 or in XBMC Live a cheap GT210 or 8400GS Nvidia card can playback flawless 1080p even with a Pentium 3....
