I've submitted a patch at http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/10715 that fixes external Python support to include modules in site-packages directory (as well as any other "standard" locations built into Python).

Hopefully someone will roll this in fairly quick as without it external modules are inaccessible without resorting to hacks in the plugins.
