I need to purchase an affordable infrared remote kit for the HTPC I'm building my dad for xmas. I actually need a decent quality remote (not just the receiver) because he will actually use the remote. On my box I use the Xbox DVD playback kit IR dongle converted to USB with my Harmony 880. I am thinking of trying this remote:

I require an actual infrared receiver kit, not the crappy ones that emulate a mouse. Those things are trash. Any info is appreciated.

yup, that's the one I've got - worked straight out of the box with karmic/xbmc 9.11

I use this remote. Everything worked out of the box. Recently upgraded to the Dharma beta and it still works. The only thing that sucks is there is no button that emulates the right click of a mouse. I need that to access the options menu to update my library without resetting XBMC, and changing fanart for movies.

I know its a big more expensive, but I placed an order for a Rii Wireless Mini keyboard, its about the same size as a remote control and since its a full keyboard you can be sure everything works. You got a nice d-pad like thing for navigation and a trackpad to emulate the mouse.

I kept on reading that it works out of the box with XBMC, I can't tell you that I have tried it out myself but its on its way and what I just mentioned was based on the many reviews I read.

Also forgot to mention, its backlit and charges through USB. Comparing prices, this would only cost you around 13 dollars more if you order it from one of the other sellers on Amazon.
