IR (InfraRed) remote poor range?
#1
Hi first post although I've been using xbmc since back in the days of the original xbox.

I now have a htpc set up running the Dharma RC2 and everything is pretty good.

I got a MCE remote and receiver plugged in and running. The receiver is the HP box that quite a few people seem to use. The remote is another HP device. The LIrc setup required a bit of tinkering to get the receiver recognized and start accepting my remotes codes.

My only gripe with the set up is that the remote only seems to work from within a 2 meter range. Which means I have to get up off the sofa and move closer to the TV to get it to work. Kind of defies the purpose of a remote. I can see that the receiver is picking up a signal because the little red LED blinks. It's just not relaying that message correctly. This is why I think it's more likely to be a problem with LIrc.

Has anybody else had similar issues, or are there any LIrc pros out there who know if there is something I can do with the config files to increase my remotes range.

Oh and here's the remote and receiver set I have.

I have an LCD TV, so not plasma. The a/v rack has glass shelves, no direct sunlight or bright spotlights though.

Fire up irw and see if every button press registers.

Best thing about the HP receiver is that it works with any remote in my house. I've programmed my Yamaha amp and TV remote so that when my MCE goes MIA I can grab another one. You need to just set it up manually with irrecord.
