Can an Intel Core i3 550 3.2GHZ play lossless BD rips without a vidcard?

Does one still need an NVIDIA card or can this CPU power through?

Thanks

Some hardware details would help. . . onboard chipset, memory?

Ha! Sorry, I'm asking for a buddy. I've never ventured away from Atom/Ions for myself so I didn't know it mattered.

Yes it can, I just built a similar setup but with a Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 Mini-ITX
MOBO. It runs XBMC with full HD rips (lossless from makeMKV) flawlessly with the CPU onboard GPU only.

Make sure and remember that you've got to keep that guy cool if you don't have GPU acceleration enabled. You'll be pushing the CPU pretty hard without it - much harder than you'd be pushing a GPU.

Search for i3 VAAPI or something similar for threads on getting GPU acceleration running, but I believe it's nowhere near as supported as Nvidia cards are at the moment. My two cents: spend ~$40 on an Nvidia 210 card with 512mb.

Now it can. With bleedeing edge drivers:

I tried a 40Mbs full BD rip played back with 5-6% CPU utilization.

Deinterlacing is not supported yet, but will be.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.

Not even. I picked up a GeForce 8400GS a few months ago off eBay for $20, free shipping.

Or that Smile

I think the only difference between the newer 8400GS cards and the GT 210 is that the latter supports MPEG4 simple profile decoding (or "feature set C" as Nvidia calls it). For 99% of videos out there, this won't matter, since most people never use Divx/Xvid on high def videos.
