Before going with "in my experience", have you tried using a USB keyboard?

A PS2/USB adapter is going to bring nothing to the table.

I don't have one which is why I wanted the adapter for my PS2 KB.
Can I not use a PS2 KB with a USB adapter?

Other than adding some unnecessary complexity to the troubleshooting process (is it my laptop that's not recognizing the kb, or is it this silly adapter?) .. it shouldn't be much different than plugging in a native usb keyboard - certainly worth trying I guess. Although honestly - I'd just go borrow my neighbors usb keyboard for 5 minutes. Or if you don't have neighbors bring the laptop to any place that has any sort of modern computing device and borrow that one for a minute ....

seriously you have no access to any usb keyboards anywhere?
