Does XBMC run anything in the background while playing videos in full screen?

This question is just out of sheer curiosity:

When you start the playback of a movie, what does XBMC do in the mean time?
Does it enter a mode where it, for instance, uses less RAM? Or is it just running like normal, and then adds the processing power etc. needed for movie playback?
