X4 seems cool, but I'm having a hard time finding any deals for it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundl...mbo.548003

AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX640WFGMBOX
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT
GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 740G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
$198.

Add a 1TB drive for $70 (Or get a deal on a 2TB for ~$85 if you watch for it).
Total price is $270, your "deal" is $261.50.

And you have something that is nearly twice as fast as your deal and identical in price.

One might say you're not even trying.

Most of the suggestions are overkill for an XBMC box. Look at the specs of the build I'm using in my signature. Way cheaper and more power efficient (important since it's always on) and I can play any 1080p film stutter free using DXVA.

Of course, to find the CPU I'm using you'll have to turn to ebay, but I'll see if I can find something similar.

Here's what I would go with personally:

GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813128394

G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5S-2GBNT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231203

AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor ADX250OCGMBOX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819103903

Under $155 shipped... up it to 4GB for another $30.

Nice thing with the motherboard is that it has HDMI, optical 8ch sound, gigabit, and 4 memory slots. This CPU also has plenty of processing power and is 65W to keep power consumption and heat to a minimum.

It was suggested to me that I consider a board that takes DDR3 ram, so I bought this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813128455

The Athlon II 255 Regor was $5.00 off at the local canadacomputer.com store near my gym, so I grabbed one

I plan on adding an Nvidia GPU later on, whenever it goes on sale.

And I have a 1.8gHz Celeron with 1GB of RAM. But he wanted a 555 to possibly overclock, so I gave him an alternative that was $10 more and much more powerful.

i think this looks superb. i knew a phenom would be a bit overkill i think. I'm just scared of risks, that's all.

but i think i may go with this set.

edit: What about suggestions for an ITX mobo? I dont think there's much; i've only managed to find this

I think that one's GPU in Windows could do the trick.

eh... the onboard video is a bit weaker and no hdmi port on that one... I think you'd have been better off with the one I suggested. It's nice to be able to use ddr3 because it's cheaper than dd2 and will of course outlive it, but I would have opted for a better video chipset.

That is also a viable option, but that will add significantly to the overall cost. Remember this will require a more expensive ITX case and power supply to go with it.

AMD FTW! Smile

Unless you are building a gaming rig, this is overkill. Why spend so much on the CPU and mobo? It's not like this will make movies play any better. Now if this is not strictly a dedicated media center PC, then I suppose it could make sense to make general usage a bit faster, but otherwise, I'd say stick with some of the more moderate suggestions.

Also, that board has onboard Intel Graphics chipset!!! blah!

how much do you think the ITX cases would cost with power supply?

these are the cases i'm curently looking at. I dont really want to spend too much over $50 for a case. Any other recommendations?
