[LIVE] What's the bottleneck?
#1
Hello guys, I'm having a little trouble running 1080p videos, and the odd 720p video, and I was just wondering what the bottleneck was:

The motherboard is an ASRock P4VM890 which has an Intel Socket 478 and uses DDR SDRam (2GB Max)

CPU
Code:
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : GenuineIntel
cpu family      : 15
model           : 3
model name      : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz
stepping        : 3
cpu MHz         : 2553.557
cache size      : 256 KB
fdiv_bug        : no
hlt_bug         : no
f00f_bug        : no
coma_bug        : no
fpu             : yes
fpu_exception   : yes
cpuid level     : 5
wp              : yes
flags           : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe constant_tsc up pebs bts pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl cid
bogomips        : 5107.11
clflush size    : 64
cache_alignment : 128
address sizes   : 36 bits physical, 32 bits virtual
power management:

GPU
Code:
NVidia GeForce 7900 GS (I don't think it's this because I used to use this for my main gaming rig)

RAM
Code:
MemTotal:         444196 kB (This data suggests 512MB but I always thought it only had 256MB)

Hope you can help,
Kris

So even though the GPU used to run video games which I'm assuming were much more demanding, a new one would solve the issue without upgrading RAM/MoBo/CPU?

exactly. without going into too much detail about video game performance vs. VDPAU decoding performance, even a GeForce G210 card would be sufficient for your current setup to allow 1080p decoding.

Excellent, I'll just check power usage and I'll purchase one, thanks!

Sorry for the double post,

it turns out the power usage of the G210 is less, I've just purchased one and will let you know how it goes,

Your problem is the 7900 GS doesn't support VDPAU. Only certain 8xxx cards and 9xxx and up.

I am using the 8400 GS now, never had problems with playing video until Dharma final. I have a 240GT in another computer, am doing to swap out the 8400 GS.

Finally going to go from component video to HDMI with the 240GT.
