High Drop Frames, Crystal HD, & XBMC 10.0
#1
This feels like a never-ending project as I've tried almost everything I can think of!

I have a Dell Studio Hybrid running Dharma XBMC Live with the specs and config below. I'm noticed high frame drops on certain files (usually 1080p MKVs) and I'm not sure what else I can do to remedy this. Please let me know what other information I can provide to find something to make this work as it should.

MODEL: Dell Studio Hybrid 140g
XBMC: 10.0 r35648 (compiled: Dec 17 2010)
O/S: Linux 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 2...
CPU: Pentium Dual-Core T4300 @ 2.10GHz
RAM: 4GB installed, reported Free (3143MB)
HD: 28.5GB
GPU: Broadcom Crystal HD - either BCM970012NB or BCM970010NB
Resolution: [email protected] - Full Screen (30.04Hz)
TV: Sony Bravia 800 series 55: connected via HDMI
Audio: Receiver through SPDIF
Home Network:
- Videos stored on Windows Home Server
- Connected via Cat6 cable to Gigabit Router
- Connected via Cat6 to Gigabit Switch
- Connected via Cat 6 to Gigabit port on box
- QOS setup for traffic from Home Server to XBMC PC

When playing this file, I have the following on my Codec Info screen:

D(Audio: dca, 48000Hz, 5.1, s16, 1536 kb/s) P(aq:98%, kB/s:1481.43)
D(Video: h264, yuv420p, 1920x816 [PAR 1:1 DAR 40:18]) P(vq:99%, dc:chd-h264, Mb/S (range 4-12), drop: 1000+ (after 1 minute), pc:non)

C( ad: 0.000, a/v: 0.1xx, edl:-, dcpu: 4% acpu: 1% vpcu: 20%)
W( fps: range 12-24 CPU0: 20% CPU1: 10%) S(refresh:60 missed:1 speed:+0.100% sync -8% error: range 200-1000%)

I have the following settings within XBMC, but have tried every adjustment I can find.

Render Method: Auto Detect
VDPAU: Enabled
CrystalHD: Enabled
Adjust display refresh rate to match video: Enabled
Synch Playback to Display: Enabled
A/V sync method: Video clock (Resample audio)

Display Mode: Full Screen #1
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh Rate: 60.00
Vertical Blank Sync: Always enabled

I put XBMC Live on it last weekend after running into similar issues in Windows. Many of my MKVs work fine with approx 250 dropped frames, but there are quite a few that seem to continue the frame dropping. I'm new to Linux, but more than willing to try anything.

Appreciate it in advance for any suggestions to improving the frame drop rate or the MB/s of the video.

Can you turn on debug logging and repost the log.
The problem seems similar to http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=88861

I removed the portion where it was scanning for music. Let me know if you want the .old dump as well. Thanks!

Also, I looked at the other link and i have a way faster proc. Pentium Dual Core 2.1GHz. And also a Broadcrom Crystal HD.

What's weird is certain files do not work. i.e James Bond For Your Eyes Only is one of the problem files, but Avatar works great. Both 1080p.

same issue here, any solutions yet?

Crystal HD just is WAY less robust with decoding than NVidia or AMD based solutions...

Try with render method set to basic shaders(arb).

I finally threw in the towel and pulled out my dusty Acer Revo 3610. I'm shocked at how well XBMC Live is working...a year ago when I was originally using that device, I had it running under Windows and it was dog slow.

The only issue I'm facing now relates to the audio sounds for navigation and the matching of lips to audio...it's so close, but I can't seem to get it to match perfectly. Both of those are being discussed in other threads.

I have the same problem. Macbook (2006) with HDMI out to a Sony Bravia.
No dropped frames if viewed in windowed mode or on Macbook screen.
I tried XBMC 10.1 but it does not see my CrystalHD card.
