1080p frame dropping on my Atom/Ion simply stem from overheating
#1
To anybody struggling with judder/frame dropping in 24fps/1080p, this might be a simple fix. Check your GPU temp during playback hiccups. I noticed the Ion temp in my Zotac Mag nearing 90C! So I went into the bios and cranked the fan a little, lowering the max temp to 75-80C.

I’m getting smooth playback now, with frames dropping only briefly while seeking. It’s not an ideal fix, as the box is now audible during quiet scenes, so questions…

1) Given that I can’t throttle the fan down without the GPU throttling, too, I’m wondering how much an SSD would lower the ambient temperature over the stock 5400rpm drive. 10C, perhaps?

2) Or would running Live over full Ubuntu be less tasking for the CPU/GPU, making for slightly lower temps?

3) Or maybe try another driver that would handle Ion’s temps better?

And just curious, what GPU temps do you Atom/Ion guys get during home screen idle and during heavy playback?

Currently running Dharma on Ubuntu 9.10 with NVIDIA 256.35 driver and NFS mounts
