*.mkv files with ASS(SSA) subtitles doesn't work

dazex Wrote:Not an instant fix, no. But I can get some subtitles to play during the opening song but not elsewhere. I can't make any sense of it, and I have great troubleshooting skills. Extracted the ass subtract and used the same software most of the groups use to encode the sub to see if I can see anything, and haven't had any luck. Sad

As the wolf mentioned song subtitles are hard coded. I don't know of any anime I have with soft sub songs.

I know nothing about this process so this is going to sound dumb but nearly all new subs are done in mkv and none of them really work. Someone just needs to go to nyaa torrents(http://www.nyaa.eu) or something and grab 4-5 new episodes. See if they play and take them apart and see the subs and see if a problem can be found.

Use this page ( http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrents&catid=...t=1&order= ) and grab anything in there they are all mkvs.

Opening song was not hardcoded in. That's why my findings was weird. I am using Aegisub program to edit the subtitle tracks that I extract from the mkv.

I test on both devices and the results are consistent. It's odd that your iPad is able to display the ssa sub. It's possible that ssa sub is working and ass is the one broken? ass is basically a newer version of ssa. aka ssa v4 according to Wikipedia.

Does anyone know where the problem is?

Is it because libssa takes up too much cpu and that's why it can't run with HD videos?

I have the source for both and am looking through it but don't really know where to look. The last thing to change regarding these in the xbmc source tree was with respect to the message overlay and before that the alignment.

Any news on this ? This is the most annoying thing with xbmc no ssa/ass subtitles

I am after this as well. It makes watching the evangelion remake movies along with all the rest of my anime a pita since they're all ASS subs in mkv and I don't know Japanese.

I know, sounding like a broken record but any update on the ssa.ass subtitles working in XBMC ?

I would pay to have this working.

No updates on this yet, guys. Be Paitient (it's killing me too), it will come. If you want to keep on the bleeding edge of news, check out the changelog link in the unofficial nightly thread (stickied). That will more or less tell you when someone has fixed the subtitle problem or not. Look for the iOS/ATV related changes. Bumping the threads for news like this tends to annoy the devs.

I give you my word that I will update this thread when they do.

So, everyone, please stop asking.

Nightlies haven't been updated yet to include this change, but the next one should have it!

You might want to hold off until I figure out why the subs are not showing up. That commit only fixes the crash.
