[AppleTV2] ATV2 4.1 XBMC Crashes after few minutes
#46
I ran into this problem today, and I think I narrowed down the reason of the crash to this in /var/log/syslog:

Quote:Mar 9 19:16:34 Apple-TV /Applications/AppleTV.app/AppleTV[406]: VERS: comparing OS 4.2.1 with 4.1

Mar 9 19:19:33 Apple-TV ReportCrash[426]: Formulating crash report for process AppleTV[406]

While SSHed into the Apple TV, I could still ping mesu.apple.com. I removed the extra blank line from the end of /etc/hosts and now all is well. If anyone would like to use my exact hosts file, I've put it up for download here.

I tried installing NitoTV, disabling updating, rebooted the atv2, but still crashing after 10 minutes or so.

I also tried editing the /etc/hosts file as suggested: this is what mine looks like:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com

and here is the output from pinging mesu

Apple-TV:~ root# ping mesu.apple.com
PING a97.g.akamai.net (165.254.34.183): 56 data bytes

4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 15.831/17.319/18.981/1.474 ms

I'm at a loss--I've been really enjoying the whole set-up but this is driving me crazy.

Crashing here too. I have been stable for the last two weeks and now after a few minutes it crashes back to the main menu. Out of the blue no less!
I will try blocking again with Nito TV.
Update: Even though it's blocked by Nito, the update warning happens anyway and it crashes XBMC back to the main menu.

After reading some related posts

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=96362&page=3

I turned the update back on in NitoTV, then said "update later", but what I think works even more is editing the /etc/hosts file correctly.

As several others have said, you need to point the update server back to yourself (your local machine). So here is a copy of my /etc/hosts again:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com
(there is a blank line here- and it is very important)

the blank line after the mesu.apple.com line is the key (and it wasn't by my own understanding but others).

Also, if you have set up the /etc/hosts file correctly with that extra line, and then do a "ping mesu.apple.com" it should show it trying to reach 127.0.0.1, not some other IP address.

So far,, after fixing the /etc/hosts file XBMC has not crashed.

I've updated XBMC, and edited the ATV2 hosts file as noted (including blank line at the end). However, XBMC is still crashing back to Front Row every few minutes.

Do I *also* need to do the NitroTV bit to force the updates off? Since editing the hosts file, it isn't prompting me for the update.

Do I now need to re-boot the ATV2 completely? And if so, now that there's an un-tethered boot, should I just also re-jailbreak for the untethered version?

Is the new Nito fix an updated nitoTV or this updatebegone? I'm using whichever version of nitoTV I've had since I updated plugins a week ago or so and I can confirm that the disable updates through nitoTV is not working now (I'm sure everyone else knows that too.)

Edit 1: I installed updatebegone....restarted AppleTV (not just lowtide) but it's still crashing here.
Edit 2: Hopefully fixed...been running for 13 or so minutes now. I installed updatebegone, then enabled updates in nitoTV (basically removed localhost for updates in host file) and it seems to be working ok after a reboot of AppleTV. I'm crossing my fingers

If you're comfortable with ssh you can login and run "apt-get update && apt-get ugprade" to make sure all your packages are current. Outdated packages are likely causing a few people issues.

In some cases the "apt-get upgrade" will fail to install a nitotv update because it's being held back, so you'll need to run "apt-get dist-upgrade". Should be safe if all that's being held back is a nitotv update.

Re: the updatebegone and manually editing /etc/hosts, I've never had to manually edit the hosts file - updatebegone has always worked. Anyone still having issues after installing updatebegone should verify all their packages are current at least.
