i reflashed my apple tv as there was some problems with it upon reinstall of xbmc this is what happens everytime i so much as click smb in the add soruce option

First add network location. This will enable you to add the topmost share folder and network credentials if required.
Then when you want to add the source go via the newly created network location.

i just reinstalled xbmc a few times and it came back! thanks for the help

I had this exact issue. I found that a restart of xbmc (not even rebooting the whole ATV, but just XBMC) to solve my problem. You probably didn't need to reinstall (just for others out there)

My way of solving the smb drive not connected is to "rename" the smb under Network, I just enter the rename and save. The XBMC will ask for restart and then my drive is up and running.
