Mac Mini XBMC server to stream to ATV2 XBMC Client?
#1
I'm trying to find a guide or something for this but can't see it. I have a Mac Mini set up as an XBMC box in my lounge and I want to use an ATV2 as a bedroom XBMC client that can stream everything from my Mac Mini Cool

Thats sensible right? Sounds possible, but searching for XBMC server doesnt get me very far, can anyone help? Huh

Im no MAC expert but if you can set up a share on your mini to the media in question, all you need to do is map that share on your ATV2.
XBMC-ATV2 - Frodo
XBMC-LR - Zotac Zbox Plus - 36gb SSD - 3Gb Mem - Frodo
XBMC-BR - Foxcon 330i - 16gb SSD - 2Gb Mem - FrodoRc3
XBMC-Mini - MacMini - 128Gb OCZ Agility - 5Gb Mem - Frodo - Running SQL - Auto Library Update
Synology DiskStation Ds1512+(Dsm 4.3-3776) - 4gb Mem - 5*3tb Wd Reds [SHR] - 2GB Bonded Link - (SSD Cache WIP)

There's no server solution AFAIK. I assume that you have your XBMC library set up on the mini. I also assume that you want to see the same library on the ATV2 (kinda like an extender). If yes, you need to get the library into a MySQL database and point both the mini and the ATV2 to it. See this thread e.g.: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=91485.

If you're OK to maintain to separate libraries, just point XBMC on ATV2 to the share and rescan the library (as I said, I don't think that this is what you want Smile ).

Cheers

How, exactly, do I "point" my ATV2 to my Mac's XBMC library. Bear in mind, please, that I just upgraded to "lion" and it somehow broke Bonjour. Sad

No, Lion breaks SMB.

Try one of these:

By pointing I mean to add the relevant shares as sources in XBMC.

I personally upgraded only my MacBook Pro to Lion, my mini (the actual HTPC) still running 10.6.8 so I don't have much experience per se. My NAS is probably a bit different from what I read typically in the forums. I use the Apple Airport Extreme Basestation with a USB hub and 6 external drives (3 of them dedicated to media storage). I haven't set up SMB or other fancy stuff, no need as my only Windows machine is my work laptop.

If I check the shares (Cmd-I) in Finder, the address starts with afp://. My Lion-equipped MBP has no problem seeing them and this includes XBMC, as well. My approach may be totally wrong for many reasons but it works for me Smile
XBMC 10.1, Customizable Confluence w/MySQL as DB
Mac mini 2010 w/Gigabit Ethernet to NAS running Mac OS X 10.6.8
13" MacBook Pro 2009 w/802.11n 5GHz to NAS running Mac OS X 10.7.0
NAS: Apple Extreme Base Station + D-Link USB hub + 3 external drives (1x2TB, 2x1TB)
Panasonic TC-P42S2
(+ Xbox 360 S and PS3 slim)

XBMC only reads SMB, even when on the Mac. The Airport Basestation comes with SMB already enabled (in other words, it uses both AFP and SMB) which is likely why you never had to set it up. That and/or you have the volumes locally mounted, and XBMC on the Mac is pointed to those local mounts.

In any case, Lion as a client isn't an issue.
