[LIVE] Wireless Setup Issue
#1
Hi all. I recently purchased a Zotac zbox hd-i40 and have installed xbmc live on a 32gb sdd. Base functionality seems to work as we does wired ethernet connectivity, but I can't seem to get the wireless working.

I've tried these instructions which seem pretty straight forward:
http://www.xbmcfreak.nl/en/wifi-onder-linux-configureren/When I do that it just doesn't seem to connect.

I've tried these instructions too:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=81858

I get wicd curses up and running and it can see my networks. I set the proper configs and it fails to connect. I've also tried removing all security and it still won't connect. I figured if it was having driver issues with the Ralink RT 2860 then it wouldn't be able to even detect the current wireless. I also found this thread :
http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/ubuntu-...d-wpa.html

if which he suggests recompiling for a driver error, but that seems to be more related to WPA and I can't even get an unsecured link to work.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!! I don't really want to have to end up loading windows on this to get xbmc fully functional.

Thanks!

Chris

To be honest I don't know what could be wrong if you can see the network and you have no security. There is no possibility that you are doing something wrong? Not sure how..but sometimes one do simple mistakes...

I always suggests to people to boot a ubuntu desktop CD in live mode, if then connects you at least know that linux+hw can deal with it.

I guess a driver error is possible...if it is probably not simple to fix without a guide. You can always try with different versions of ubuntu and see if it makes any difference.

I am working on a wireless manager for xbmc but unless you are doing a very simple mistake in wicd it will not help you.

(it is also using wicd)

Ok, so after several attempts to get wireless configured manually in the /etc/network/interfaces file as well as using wicd-curses I tried booted up from a Ubuntu desktop CD and wireless configured like a charm both without and with security using the gui config tool. So at this point I'm totally baffled b/c wicd is a pretty simple program so I can't imagine there is a user error on my part. It can see the networks, I select my ssid with the right arrow configure the settings but it fails to authenticate and obtain an IP.

I suppose I'm going to have to run either Ubuntu or Win 7 on my zbox for now :-(

Hi
Have you tried this how to?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=318539
it got me up and running.....eventually Laugh
also where it says [IMPORTANT: See "WPA-PSK key generation"]
dont worry about that for the time being and whilst testing, just put your password in plain text it will work fine ...just wont be as secure Smile
as you pretty close I would just compare your /etc/network/interfaces with the sample config thats closest to the setup your trying to achieve
Cheers
