USB Infra-Red/IR Receiver
#1
Hi all,

I have just setup an Acer Revo R3700 running XBMC on Windows 7 and now I want to get the thing working with a remote control.

I already own a One For All URC-7780 which controls all my other AV gear perfectly and I intend to use this to also control XBMC.

I don't want to have to buy a £25 MCE remote off ebay coz I don't need the remote control, all I need is the USB IR receiver.

Can anyone recomend or link to somewhere I can buy one of these alone, I can't seem to find one anywhere. (please note I'm in the UK).

Thanks in advance.

I recommend the HP IR receivers. Many people recommend these RC6 MCE eHome series IR receivers because of great LIRC support. They will also work nicely in Windows.

I'd just by the cheapest remote/receiver combo and dump the remote. The receiver will be receive the same signals regardless of the brand or model. It's only the remote that is different.

If you have a programmable remote, in combination with EventGhost, you'll be able to program 255 different actions. More than enough for anybody!

I bought this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...0494923130

I had a quick look on ebay.co.uk and I can't see any listed there at the moment. Don't just buy a cheapo remote as these will cause you pain. Ideally only buy a Microsoft receiver or a compatible like the HP (these are often described as eHome or RC6 remotes). http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews lists various remotes known to be Microsoft compatible.

If you can't wait you'll need to either buy a receiver from some other ebay site like the US (but be prepared for a high P&P charge) or buy a remote and receiver combo like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...0597112174. Actually that one seems expensive, and I note there are several other MS remotes listed at the moment. Note that several of the postings are for just the handset with no receiver. Avoid these!

It does not harm to have the remote handset as well. You can get the remote working with its own handset first, then try your universal handset, and if you run into problems you'll know it's the universal handset not your receiver.
