How I got VAAPI working on my XBMC Live
#1
Thumbs Up
Hi All,

Been looking, since the dawn of my first Dharma, installation after an easy way to get support for the hardware decoding parts of my Intel Core i5 processor. Just installing XBMC Dharma couldnt play my 1080p movies... major stuttering. Playing 720p worked, with basically full load in all cores of the processor.

Seems I got got it working now.

My basic setup
  • Zotac H55 Mini-ITX Mobo
  • Intel Core i5
  • 2 Gb RAM

Prerequisits
Well... I started out with my Dharma installation, done two day after release, without any kinds of modifications/installations done from the terminal.

What I did

This is exactly how I made it work, perhaps the reboot between the installations are redundant, but I did them, so I'm putting them in my description.

  1. Press Ctrl - Alt - F3 to get to terminal
  2. Log in
  3. sudo apt-get update
  4. sudo apt-get upgrade
  5. sudo reboot now
  6. ctrl - alt - F3, when XBMC has started
  7. Log in
  8. sudo apt-get install vlc
  9. sudo reboot now

When XBMC restarded, I went into video settings but to my disappointment I couldnt find the VAAPI tick-box, just the ordinary VDPAU. But nevertheless, I started a full HD 1080p movie, and it played flawlessly. Only one of the processor core is really working, around 15 - 20%, peaking at 40%.

So Im happy! Smile Hope it might help anyone else as well!

Now I just want to make the menues, with DVD-cover arts slide smooth as well...
