re-add app launcher (as it was on xbox)? [linux]
#1
Im on the verge of compiling a ubuntu based boot disk to use on my cell based home entertainment system.
There are some issues i need to clear, but i got some questions first.

Since i dont want to use a keyboard/mouse (remote will suffice) nor conventional desktop manager (gnome, kde and so on), i wonder if there is still a way to launch other apps from xbmc as it was on xbox?

Im not sure wether this actually is possible in ubuntu, but from what i read about the xbmc-live, its running on x11.
Meaning that all apps that can handle x11 wouldnt need aditional window manager in order to function.

and since my system resources are limited (256mb ram, 256mb graphics ram) i dont feel like wasting precious ram on a gnome desktop..

So is there a way to use xbmc as a gnome replacement, launching apps and return to xbmc when i quit the app?

By the way, does xbmc work with cell/ppc processors?

and please dont ask about the hardware, have a guess and google it Wink

Works on PPC, not cell (I think).

You only need X11, not gnome. Although I think 256mb may be cutting it a bit low.
Code:
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON `xbmc_%`.* TO 'xbmc'@'%';
IF you have a mysql problem, find one of the 4 dozen threads already open.

XBMC for AppleTV2 and iPad run in 256MBs of RAM and they don't have swap either.
